The defense team of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro asked the court today to allow him to serve a 27-year prison sentence for an attempted coup at home, citing his health problems.
Bolsonaro, 70, has been under house arrest since August and faces an immediate prison sentence.
According to a request filed by his lawyers with the Supreme Court, such imprisonment "will have serious consequences and poses a risk to his life."
The defense argues that allowing him to serve his sentence at home would be a "humanitarian" measure.
The former far-right president (2019-2022) is suffering from the effects of a stab wound to the stomach in 2018, and was diagnosed with skin cancer in September.
The Supreme Court formally rejected Bolsonaro's appeal against the verdict in mid-November.
However, his defense team has until early next week to file additional appeals.
Bolsonaro was found guilty in September of leading a "criminal organization" that intended to return him to power after the victory of his leftist rival Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the October 2022 elections.
