Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said the military had killed five prominent Hamas members in Gaza, where Israel carried out deadly strikes today, claiming it was responding to another ceasefire violation by the Palestinian Islamist movement.
"Today, Hamas violated the ceasefire again by sending a terrorist into Israeli-controlled territory in the Palestinian territories to attack soldiers," the statement said.
In response, Israel eliminated five prominent Hamas terrorists, it added.
Netanyahu's cabinet has urged mediators to insist that Hamas honor its ceasefire commitments.
The Gaza Strip Civil Defense, which operates under the rule of Hamas, said earlier today that 24 people were killed and 54 wounded in Israeli attacks across the Palestinian territory, where Israel and Hamas accuse each other of violating a fragile ceasefire, the AP reported.
The ceasefire in the Gaza Strip has been in effect since October 10th.
