Chinese President Xi Jinping said that China and the United States (US) should maintain the momentum in their relations and continue to move in the right direction, based on equality, respect and mutual benefit, China Media Group (CMG) reported today.
Xi made the remarks during a phone call with US President Donald Trump on Monday.
The Chinese president noted that he had a successful meeting with Trump in Busan last month, where they reached many important joint agreements.
"We have re-directed the course of the giant ship of China-US relations and given it greater momentum for steady forward sailing, sending a positive message to the world," Xi said.
"China-US relations have generally maintained stable and positive progress since then, which is welcomed by both countries and the international community," Xi said.
He pointed out that the fact that "cooperation between China and the US benefits both sides, while confrontation harms them," which has been proven by experience, has been reaffirmed.
"The two sides should expand the list of cooperation and shorten the list of problems, so as to achieve greater progress, create new space for cooperation, and bring more benefits to the people of both countries and the world," the Chinese president said.
Xi stressed China's principled position on the Taiwan issue, noting that Taiwan's return to China is an integral part of the post-war international order.
He recalled that China and the United States fought side by side against fascism and militarism.
"Right now, it is even more important for the two sides to jointly safeguard the victory in World War II," the Chinese president said.
President Trump said that President Xi is a great leader.
Trump added that he enjoyed meeting Xi in Busan and that he fully agreed with his comments on the relationship between the two countries.
He added that both sides are implementing all the agreements reached by the two leaders in Busan.
Trump stressed that China played an important role in winning World War II. He also underlined that the US understands the importance of the Taiwan issue to China.
The two presidents also exchanged views on the Ukraine crisis. Xi reiterated that China supports all efforts that contribute to peace. He expressed the hope that all parties will reduce their differences as soon as possible and reach a just and lasting peace agreement to resolve the crisis.
