Israel said today it had taken possession of the remains of another hostage that Palestinian militants in Gaza had handed over to the Red Cross, but it was not immediately clear whether it was one of the three remaining hostage bodies still in the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli military announced earlier today that the Red Cross had taken possession of the body of a hostage from Gaza and that it would be handed over to them.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office announced that the remains received today will be forensically examined for identification.
This is the latest handover of bodies under last month's ceasefire agreement.
Under the terms of the ceasefire agreement that came into effect on October 10 after more than two years of war in Gaza, the Palestinian Hamas is to return the bodies of three more hostages kidnapped on October 7, 2023 - two Israelis and a Thai.
The Palestinian group Islamic Jihad said it found the remains of a hostage earlier this week in Nuseirat, a refugee camp in central Gaza.
Palestinian militants returned 25 bodies of hostages under a ceasefire agreement. In exchange, Israel handed over the bodies of 330 Palestinians to Gaza.
Hamas should have handed over all the remaining bodies of the hostages much more quickly, but reported that it could not quickly reach all the remains as they were buried under rubble after two years of war.
Israel has accused Hamas of stalling and threatened to resume military operations or withhold humanitarian aid if all the remains of the hostages are not returned, arguing that failure to hand over the bodies violates the ceasefire agreement.
