Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today asked the President of Israel to pardon him in his lengthy corruption trial.
President Isaac Herzog's office characterized Netanyahu's pardon request as "an extraordinary request that carries significant implications."
Netanyahu is Israel's only prime minister on trial. He is accused of fraud, breach of trust and bribery in three cases.
The prime minister said in a video address that his trial had divided the country, and that a pardon would help restore national unity, and that appearing in court three times a week made it difficult for him to lead the country.
Netanyahu's request is sent to the Ministry of Justice, and then transferred to the president's office, which will formulate a solution.
United States President Donald Trump called on Israel to pardon Netanyahu a few weeks ago.
