At least 12 people have died in a fire that broke out in an apartment building in the southern Chinese city of Shantou, state news agency Xinhua reported.
The fire broke out in a four-story building.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
The incident came as the death toll from Hong Kong's deadliest fire in decades rose to 160 on Tuesday. The blaze has prompted calls from top Chinese officials to crack down on safety risks in the housing industry, Reuters reported.
China also announced last month a comprehensive inspection of fire safety standards in high-rise buildings across the country, following a deadly fire in Hong Kong, to prevent similar disasters on the mainland.
The Shantou fire is the latest in a series of similar fatal incidents across the country in recent years.
In April, 20 people died in a fire that broke out in a building for the elderly at a retirement home in the northern province of Hebei.
A few weeks later, a fire at a restaurant in northeastern China killed 22 people.
