Tehran today accused Israel of "sowing division" and undermining Iran's national unity, after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed support for protests in the country, the Israeli newspaper The Times of Israel reported.
"The Zionist regime is determined to seize every opportunity to sow division and undermine our national unity, and we must remain vigilant," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Bagai.
He added that Israeli and American leaders are "inciting violence."
At least 16 people have been killed during a week of unrest in Iran, human rights groups said yesterday.
Protests are taking place across the country, accompanied by clashes between demonstrators and security forces.
Netanyahu said yesterday that Israelis "identify with the struggle" of the Iranians.
"The government of Israel, the state of Israel and my own policy - we identify with the struggle of the Iranian people, with their aspirations for freedom and justice. It is quite possible that we are at a moment when the Iranian people are taking their destiny into their own hands," Netanyahu said.
