Several thousand supporters of ousted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro gathered in Caracas last night demanding his release.
The rally, organized at the invitation of the authorities, was held as Delcy Rodriguez was sworn in as Venezuela's interim president by parliament and shortly after Maduro, who was forcibly arrested and taken to New York on Saturday, pleaded not guilty in a US federal court.
The protesters chanted "Maduro holds on, Venezuela rises," while some held figurines and portraits of Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, who was also forcibly taken to the United States during the American intervention, the French newspaper Le Monde reported on its website.
One banner read "Trump and Marco Rubio are damned murderers and kidnappers," and another said "Where is the real justice in the USA?"
Nicolas Maduro Guerra, the son of the ousted president, joined the protesters after the inauguration of Delcy Rodriguez.
He said he had "indirect communication" with his father, and that he could say nothing more.
"We have a good team there that supports us and helps us defend dignity," he added.
