Two people were killed and six were wounded in a shooting outside a church in Salt Lake City, Utah, last night, police said.
The attack took place in the parking lot of a Mormon church (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). Dozens of people were attending a funeral at the time of the incident. All of the victims were adults.
Police said they do not believe the attacker had anything against any particular religion, nor do they believe the armed attack was random.
"We don't believe this was a targeted attack on any religion or anything like that," said Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd.
No one has been detained so far.
The Mormon Church is headquartered in Salt Lake City, and about half of Utah's 3,5 million residents are members of the faith. Churches like the one where the attack occurred are located throughout the state.
The Mormon church has been on heightened alert since last month, when a former Marine opened fire at a church in Michigan, killing four people and setting it on fire.
The FBI determined that his motive was intolerance towards that religion.
