Australia today urged its citizens in Iran to leave the country immediately.
"Leave Iran immediately. Commercial departure options remain available but are becoming increasingly limited. Airspace closures and flight cancellations may occur soon, making later departures impossible," reads a warning on the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs' online domestic travel assistance service.
The warning states that travel to Iran is still not recommended, and that Australian citizens who do not leave the country despite the warning are responsible for their own safety.
They are advised to be prepared to stay in the shelter for an extended period of time, and to stock up on water, food, and medicine.
The warning added that the Australian embassy in Iran has been suspended and that the provision of consular assistance is "extremely limited".
"The security situation in Iran is extremely volatile... The response of security forces to the protests has been harsh, and many demonstrators and bystanders have been injured, killed or detained. Avoid public gatherings and protests. Australians, including those with dual citizenship, are at high risk of arrest," the warning reads.
