The relative of Erfan Soltani, a protester who was detained by authorities in Iran last week, said Soltani is expected to be executed today, the BBC reports.
According to reports, Soltani, 26, was sentenced to death after allegedly taking part in protests near the Iranian capital Tehran.
His relative told BBC Persian that Soltani was arrested on Thursday, the day the protests in Iran reached their peak.
"In an extremely expedited procedure, in just two days, the court imposed the death sentence," said Soltani's relative, adding that the family was told the execution would be carried out on Wednesday, January 14th.
Avjer Shehi, from the Hengav Human Rights Organization, said her teams had "never seen a case move so quickly."
The BBC reports that Shehi, who says she fears there are many cases like that of Erfan Soltani.
However, due to internet outages, Hengav has no information about other people who have been sentenced to death, Shehi told Radio 4's Today show.
Shehi says Erfan's sister, who is a lawyer, tried to take on her brother's case, but the authorities told her there was no case she could handle.
Iranian authorities told the family they would be allowed one last meeting with Erfan before his execution, Shehi said. She added that he had not been allowed any contact with his family since his arrest.
"He's just someone who is against the current situation in Iran... and now he's been given the death penalty for expressing his opinion," says Shehi.
United States President Donald Trump has threatened to "take very strong action" if Iranian authorities begin carrying out death sentences against anti-government protesters this week, the British newspaper The Guardian reported today.
"If they do something like that, we will take very strong action," Trump told CBS News in an interview broadcast on Tuesday night, just hours before the US president was due to be briefed on the casualty figures in Iran.
The Guardian reports that there are fears that one of the thousands of protesters arrested last week, Erfan Soltani, faces imminent execution, having been brought to trial, convicted and sentenced since his arrest on Thursday last week.
Soltani was arrested in Karaj, a city located just on the northwestern outskirts of the capital Tehran, at the height of the protests, before a complete internet shutdown.
