A passenger plane carrying 11 people disappeared from radar today in a mountainous region between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sulawesi, officials said.
The plane was carrying officials from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.
The Indonesian airline's ATR 42-500 was traveling from Yogyakarta to the capital of South Sulawesi when it disappeared from radar, said Transport Ministry spokesman Endah Purnama Sari.
He was last contacted while flying in the Leang-Leang area of Maros, a mountainous district in South Sulawesi province.
Hikers on Mount Bulusaraung reported finding scattered debris, airline markings and fires in several places where it is believed the plane may have crashed.
"Rescue teams are trying to reach the area" in steep terrain in Bulusaraung National Park, said Bangun Navoko, the army commander in South Sulawesi.
