The Danish Defense Forces established a temporary military area on the outskirts of Nuuk, the capital and largest city in Greenland, at 16 p.m. on Saturday.

This is an area known in Greenlandic as Qinngorput, and in Danish as Verdens Ende, or "End of the World".

The defense forces will use the area to store equipment. The location has already been used for storage, Greenland Police said.

They also said that the area would be under constant surveillance, reports index.hr.

"There will be constant security in the area and unauthorised persons will not be allowed access to the fenced area. Safety and the local area have been taken into account, and relevant signs and barriers have been installed to guide road users and pedestrians."

US President Donald Trump has insisted for months that the US should control Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark, and earlier this week he said anything less than the Arctic island being in American hands would be "unacceptable".

Yesterday he announced that he would impose tariffs on eight European countries that oppose it.
