Rescuers in Indonesia have found the remains of a small plane that disappeared from radar yesterday in a mountainous region on the island of Sulawesi.

The ATR 42-500 aircraft was traveling from Java to South Sulawesi when it lost contact with air traffic control and was operated by Indonesia Air Transport (Indonesia Air).

It was carrying eight crew members and three passengers from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries who were on board as part of an aerial maritime surveillance mission.

Rescuers spotted the remains of the plane on the slope of Mount Bulusaraung, where a group of hikers found its scattered parts yesterday.

"The discovery of major parts of the aircraft significantly narrows the search zone and offers a key clue to narrowing the search area. Our joint search and rescue teams are now focusing on the search for victims, especially those who may still be alive," officials said.

Rescuers are still investigating the crash site despite thick fog, strong winds and steep terrain, officials added.
