Pope Leo XIV is among world leaders invited to join US President Donald Trump's so-called "Committee for Peace", said Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican's top diplomatic official.

Leo, the first pope from the United States and a critic of some of Trump's policies, is still considering the invitation, he said.

"The Pope has received the invitation and we are considering what to do," Parolin told reporters. "I believe we will need some time to reflect before giving a response."

The Committee's goal was initially to end the conflict in Gaza, but Trump said it would have a much broader scope and would resolve conflicts on a global scale.

While some countries, such as Israel and Egypt, readily accepted the invitation, numerous others expressed caution, and diplomats warn that it could harm the work of the United Nations.

The Vatican press office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Parolin's statements.

Leo, who has demonstrated a firm but calm diplomatic style since being elected pope last May, has repeatedly condemned the conditions in which Palestinians live in Gaza.

The Pope, the religious leader of 1,4 billion Catholics in the world, rarely joins international committees, Hina reminds.

The Vatican has an extensive diplomatic service, is a permanent observer at the United Nations, and frequently participates in discussions.
