Donald Trump illegally attempted to "overturn the results of the 2020 election" and then prevent the transfer of power to his successor, Joseph Biden, former US special counsel Jack Smith, who led two federal criminal investigations against Trump, said today.
"Instead of accepting his defeat in the 2020 election, President Trump began an illegal scheme to overturn the results and prevent the lawful transfer of power" to Democrat Biden, the winner of the election, Smith said at the beginning of his testimony before the House Judiciary Committee.
"I made my decisions without regard to President Trump's political orientation, activities or beliefs, or his candidacy for reelection in 2024. President Trump was impeached because the evidence showed that he willfully violated the laws he swore to uphold," Smith added.
"I stand by my decisions as special counsel, including the decision to indict President Trump," he added.
The former special counsel made a similar statement during a previous hearing before the same committee in December, this time behind closed doors, at the request of the Republicans who chair the committee.
Smith has been one of the main targets of Trump's displeasure for several years, and this week he called him a sicko again.
After Trump's election in November 2024, Smith was forced to drop two federal lawsuits he had brought against him — one for illegal attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election, and the other for withholding classified documents after Trump left the White House.
