Minneapolis police arrested demonstrators at the airport today who were protesting anti-immigration laws and the involvement of domestic airline Delta in the deportation of a large number of people.
A network of unions, progressive organizations and clergy called on Minnesotans today to stay off work and send their children to school in protest of the rise in anti-immigration measures in Minneapolis and St. Paul, while their officials claim that about 100 clergy have been arrested as a result.
Demonstrations have been taking place in Minneapolis every day since January 7, when an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed a woman.
Protest organizers announced today that more than 700 businesses across Minnesota were closed in solidarity with the protest.
They have organized a march in downtown Minneapolis for today and hope that the protest will be the largest yet.
The closure of stores and other businesses has particularly badly affected the Somali community in Minneapolis, whose workers and customers are staying home for fear of arrest and deportation.
