Colombian President Gustavo Petro said today that he is optimistic about a meeting with United States President Donald Trump at the White House, which is scheduled to take place on February 3, at which the leaders are expected to discuss combating organized crime.
The US revoked Petrov's visa a few months ago and imposed sanctions on him and his family over unproven drug trafficking charges.
"Talks are going well," Petro wrote on X.
According to the governments of the two countries, the upcoming meeting will include discussions on trade, regional security and the fight against transnational organized crime.
The leaders have previously clashed over immigration policy and the war in the Gaza Strip, as well as over drug trafficking.
Trump accused Petro, without providing evidence, of being an "international leader in drug trafficking," which Petro denied and stated that he was dedicated to fighting drug traffickers in Colombia.
