The Liberal Democratic Party of Japan (LDP), led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, won a landslide victory in today's parliamentary elections, with projections showing it will win more than two-thirds of the seats in parliament.
The LDP, which had 198 seats before the election, together with its coalition partner, the Japan Innovation Party (JIP), will almost certainly win at least two-thirds of the seats in the Lower House, or a total of 310 or more seats, the Japan Times reports.
This would, in essence, allow the LDP-led coalition to overcome the challenges posed by the lack of a majority in the Upper House.
Takaichi said she plans to further strengthen her party's relations with the JIP.
"We put together a joint policy agreement, line by line, with the JIP, with whom we share a similar view of the nation, when we were backed into a corner after the Komeito party left the coalition," she said.
