At least 53 people drowned or went missing, including two babies, when a boat carrying migrants sank off Libya, the UN migration agency said today.
A boat carrying 55 migrants from Africa set sail from the Libyan city of Zawaj last Thursday, and six hours later, according to survivors, it began to fill with water and sank on Friday north of the city of Zuwar, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said.
This year, 484 migrants have already drowned or disappeared while trying to reach Western Europe across the Mediterranean Sea.
Last year, more than 1.300 migrants died or went missing on that route, according to UN data.
