The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, and United States President Donald Trump spoke by phone about calming the conflict and establishing a stable situation in the Middle East, his office announced today.
Trump is scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington today to discuss US negotiations with Iran to limit Tehran's missile arsenal and control its nuclear program, Reuters reports.
Qatar has undertaken diplomatic efforts with regional allies to calm tensions between Washington and Tehran and prevent the threat of military conflict.
An adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Ali Larijani, arrived in Qatar today and is scheduled to meet with the emir.
The US and Iran held indirect talks in Oman last week, which an Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said allowed Tehran to assess Washington's seriousness and showed sufficient consensus to continue cooperation.
Al Thani and Trump discussed "supporting diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving crises through dialogue and peaceful means," the Emirati Diwan said.
Qatar also acted as a mediator in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian militant movement Hamas during the Gaza Strip war, along with the US and Egypt.
