Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader and future Prime Minister Tariq Rahman today dedicated his landslide victory in the parliamentary elections to the victims of the uprising that toppled Sheikh Hasina's iron-fisted regime in 2024.
"I dedicate my victory to the people of Bangladesh and those who sacrificed for them. From today onwards, we are free," Rahman said in his first public address since the vote.
The Election Commission said on Friday that the BNP had won 212 of the 300 seats in parliament, compared with just 77 for the coalition led by the Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami.
After denouncing numerous “irregularities and manipulations” and demanding a correction of the results, the Islamist leader changed course and finally conceded defeat on Saturday.
"We recognize the results and respect the rule of law," Shafiqur Rahman wrote in a message posted on social media this morning.
