North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, accompanied by his daughter, opened a street with apartments intended for the families of soldiers who died fighting alongside Russia against Ukraine, the North Korean news agency KCNA reported today.
North Korea has sent thousands of troops to fight alongside Moscow in the invasion of Ukraine, launched nearly four years ago, according to South Korean and Western intelligence agencies.
Seoul estimates that at least 2.000 North Korean fighters have been killed.
"Before their death, the heroic martyrs must have imagined their dear families living in a country that is still prosperous," Kim said in a speech marking the opening of the new street.
Photos released by the KCNA agency show the leader visiting new apartments, accompanied by his daughter Ju Ae.
The teenager is clearly “designated as his successor,” South Korean intelligence said last week, citing her involvement in high-profile events with her father.
In exchange for forces, Russia is sending North Korea financial aid, military technology, as well as food and energy supplies, according to analysts.
