The ideological army of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Revolutionary Guard, swore allegiance to Mojtaba Khamenei, who was elected Supreme Leader of Iran last night.
Mojtaba Khamenei succeeds his father, Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a US-Israeli bombing on the first day of the war.
The Revolutionary Guards "support the election of the Assembly of Experts and are ready for complete obedience and self-sacrifice to fulfill the divine commandments" of Mojtaba Khamenei, according to a brief statement broadcast on social media.
Iranian state television reported last night that Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the country's late supreme leader, has been named his successor.
He had long been considered a candidate, even before an Israeli strike killed his father at the start of the war on February 28, and despite never being elected or appointed to a government position, the AP reported.
The Revolutionary Guards answer to the supreme leader, and now the younger Khamenei (56) will have a central say in war strategy.
