Former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director John Brennan has joined the growing calls for the president to be removed from office on the grounds that he is unfit for office, arguing that the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution, which provides for forcible removal from office, was "written with people like Donald Trump in mind."
Brennan, who headed the intelligence agency during Barack Obama's presidency, told MS Now on Saturday that Trump's recent volatile statements about the destruction of Iranian civilization and the danger it poses to so many lives warrant his removal from the Oval Office.
"This person is clearly out of control," he said. "I think the 25th Amendment was written with Donald Trump in mind."
Brennan added that Trump is too much of a risk to be allowed to remain commander-in-chief, with the enormous firepower at his disposal, including the US nuclear arsenal.
The former CIA director's comments put him at the center of a growing debate over Trump's decision to go to war with Iran and his increasingly violent threats to inflict mass destruction on the country. The president warned on April 7 that "the entire Iranian civilization will die tonight" if the Iranian regime does not meet his ultimatum - a threat that Brennan said hinted at the possibility of using nuclear capabilities.
As Trump ramps up his aggressive and expletive-laden rhetoric, a growing number of Democrats have responded with calls to invoke the 25th Amendment. The provision, added to the U.S. Constitution in 1967, allows the vice president and a majority of the cabinet to remove the president on the grounds that he is “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.”
According to the latest NBC News poll, more than 70 Democrats in Congress have called for the amendment to be implemented.
The chances of that actually happening are almost nonexistent, given the unwavering loyalty that Trump continues to display from his Vice President, J.D. Vance, and his entire cabinet. However, concerns about Trump's increasingly inflammatory rhetoric and threats are likely to continue, given the failure of U.S.-Iran peace talks on Saturday and the possibility of renewed hostilities.
Brennan's comments were particularly striking given that he is under active investigation by the US Justice Department, as part of Trump's vendetta against those he perceives as enemies. Under pressure from the White House, the Justice Department launched a criminal investigation into Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey in July.
Two months later, Comey was indicted on two counts of lying to Congress during his 2020 testimony about the Russian election interference investigation. A judge dismissed the criminal case.
According to available information, the investigation against Brennan is still ongoing. The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Trump ally Jim Jordan, claimed in March that the investigation was "heating up."
