NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said today that he does not think the United States (US) will leave the Alliance, even though US President Donald Trump is threatening to withdraw the US from NATO.
"I don't think the US will leave NATO," Rutte said in an interview with the Sunday edition of the German newspaper Die Welt, after Trump on Friday rejected an offer from NATO countries to help resolve the Strait of Hormuz issue.
Trump rejected the offer on Friday, saying NATO countries were useless when his country needed them, alluding to those countries' refusal to get involved in the war in the Middle East.
"President Trump is clearly disappointed with some NATO members and I understand his frustration," said Rutte, who called for "a stronger Europe within a stronger NATO."
