The United States' war in Iran has cost $29 billion so far, a senior Pentagon official said today, an increase of $4 billion from an estimate made late last month.
With just six months to go before the midterm congressional elections, in which President Donald Trump's Republicans could face a tough task of retaining their majority in the House of Representatives, Democrats are posting high ratings in opinion polls as they seek to link the war to cost-of-living issues.
The Pentagon announced on April 29 that the war had cost $25 billion to that point.
Jules Hurst, who is acting comptroller, told lawmakers today that the new cost includes updated estimates for equipment repairs and replacements, as well as operating costs, Reuters reports.
"The Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Controllers' Team are constantly reviewing that assessment," Hurst said. He spoke alongside Defense Secretary Pete Hegsett and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Dan Kane.
It is unclear how the Pentagon arrived at the $29 billion figure. A source told Reuters in March that the Trump administration estimated that the first six days of the war had cost at least $11,3 billion.
