Chinese President Xi Jinping said today, during a meeting with United States (US) President Donald Trump, who is on an official visit to Beijing, that it is crucial for history, the world and people whether the two great powers can jointly respond to global challenges and that 2026 could be a historic year in bilateral relations.
"Can China and the United States overcome the 'Thucydides Trap' (the danger of war when a rapidly rising power disrupts the world's status quo) and create a new model of major-power relations? Can we jointly respond to global challenges and bring greater stability to the world? Can we jointly build a bright future for our bilateral relations, in the interests of the well-being of the two peoples and the future of mankind? These are questions of crucial importance to history, to the world, and to the people," Xi said.
He described the international situation as fluid and turbulent and said he looked forward to working with Trump to set the course and "steer the huge ship of China-US relations."
"I agreed with President Trump on a new vision for building a constructive China-US relationship based on strategic stability," Xi said.
He added that building a constructive China-US relationship based on strategic stability should not be just talk, but concrete actions by both sides towards the same goal.
China-US economic relations are mutually beneficial and win-win for both sides, Xi said.
"Where there are disagreements and frictions, equal dialogue is the only right choice," he added, according to Xinhua.
Xi revealed that the two countries' economic and trade delegations achieved "mostly balanced and positive results" in the latest round of bilateral trade talks.
"This is good news for the people of both countries and for the world," he said, urging the two sides to maintain the good momentum they have painstakingly created.
Noting that China continues to open its doors, Xi said that US companies are deeply involved in China's reform and opening-up, and the US side is welcome to increase mutually beneficial cooperation.
"The two sides should implement the important consensus we have reached and make better use of communication channels in the fields of politics, diplomacy and the military," Xi said.
The two countries also need to expand exchanges and cooperation in areas such as health, agriculture, tourism, people-to-people contacts and law enforcement, he added.
Regarding the Taiwan issue, Xi stressed that it is the most important issue in China-US relations.
"If it is properly handled, bilateral relations will be stable. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts, which will seriously jeopardize the entire relationship," Xi said, urging the US side to be particularly cautious in handling the Taiwan issue.
Trump said it was a great honor to be on a state visit to China, calling Xi a great leader and China a great country, Xinhua reported.
"I have tremendous respect for President Xi and the Chinese people," Trump said.
Trump expressed his willingness to work with Xi to strengthen communication and cooperation, overcome differences, and advance bilateral relations more than ever.
"The US and China are the most important and powerful countries in the world, and the two presidents can do many great and good things for both countries and the world," he said.
Trump encouraged representatives of the American business community to expand cooperation with China.
The two presidents exchanged views on important international and regional issues, such as the situation in the Middle East, the crisis in Ukraine, and the Korean Peninsula.
