Israeli troops have seized a strategically important position in southern Lebanon, in the deepest incursion by Israeli forces into Lebanese territory in 26 years, the military said today.
The capture of Beaufort Castle near the town of Nabatieh was preceded by several days of intense fighting and airstrikes on nearby villages, where Israeli troops were fighting Hezbollah.
The Israeli army launched the attack despite a ceasefire in effect since April 17th.
Israeli military spokesman Avichai Adrei posted a photo on the X network showing Israeli soldiers in front of the castle.
Israeli troops previously captured the castle in 1982 and held it until they withdrew from Lebanon in 2000.
Israel has expanded the scope of its operations in Lebanon in recent days, calling on residents of southern areas to evacuate.
Neither Hezbollah nor the Lebanese government commented on the Israeli advance.
