US President Donald Trump welcomed the possibility of a meeting between the presidents of Russia and Ukraine, Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky.
"I'm glad they're talking about the meeting. I think we've had an impact on that. I think it would be great if they met," the US president told reporters in the Oval Office, local media reported.
Trump added that if a meeting takes place, both Putin and Zelensky will have to make compromises.
"I suggested those compromises. They have to stop. Last month, 25.000 people were killed. Soldiers, mostly soldiers. There were civilians too," the US president said.
Zelensky proposed a direct meeting with his Russian counterpart last night to end the war. He added that Kiev does not want a "permanent war" and suggested opening direct talks between the two heads of state in a third country, citing Switzerland, Turkey or Arab countries as possible hosts.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov then responded that Zelensky could come to Moscow at any time.
Russia launched an invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
