A man has died after being attacked by a shark while fishing off the coast of the Australian state of Western Australia, police said on Monday, Reuters reported. It was the third fatal shark attack in Australia in three weeks.
The 35-year-old man was attacked this morning while spearfishing off the southern coast of Western Australia, off Michaelmas Island, near the town of Albany, about 388 kilometers south of Perth, the capital of Western Australia, police said.
He was transported to shore, where paramedics treated him, but he succumbed to his injuries.
A 4,5-meter-long shark of an unknown species was spotted by a citizen today near Michaelmas Island, a nature reserve that is visited by few people, state authorities said.
On May 24, a 39-year-old man died after being attacked by a shark while fishing on the Great Barrier Reef. The death followed the death of a 38-year-old man who was killed by a shark off an island near Perth ten days earlier.
There are about 20 shark attacks in Australia each year, but the vast majority are not fatal, according to conservation groups. Many more people drown on the country's beaches.
