The Israeli army said on Sunday that its military police criminal investigation unit is investigating the killing of a Palestinian baby by an Israeli soldier in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, Reuters reports.
The military acknowledged that seven-month-old Sam Fahd Abu Heikal was killed and both of his parents were wounded on Friday when an Israeli soldier opened fire on their car.
"Based on the findings of the preliminary examination, it was decided to open an investigation by the Military Police Criminal Investigation Department," the Israeli army said.
"Upon completion, the findings will be forwarded to the Military Prosecutor's Office," the statement said.
The Israeli army said on Friday that a soldier fired a single shot at a vehicle that the soldiers believed was speeding towards them.
The baby's father, Fahd Abu Heikal, who was driving a car in the Tel Rumeida area near the West Bank city of Hebron, said he stopped the vehicle when he saw soldiers on the road, and that a soldier standing ten meters ahead shot through the windshield after the vehicle had already stopped.
"The bullet went through the front windshield, went through my hand, then hit my son in the head and my wife in the face," Fahd told reporters on Saturday.
The military did not identify any of the soldiers who were present, nor did it say whether they were still performing their duties.
