Six people were injured in a knife attack at New York's Penn Station on Sunday night, raising security concerns a day before the city is set to host the NBA Finals, which will be attended by US President Donald Trump.
The attack occurred amid heightened security around Madison Square Garden, which is located directly above one of the country's busiest intercity train stations, according to the Associated Press. N1 citing CNN's writing.
In that hall, the Knicks welcome the San Antonio Spurs in the third and fourth games of the final series, which are played on Monday and Wednesday.
The New York Fire Department announced, according to this media outlet, that it received a call about multiple people being stabbed at one of the entrances to Penn Station around 19 p.m.
One person suffered serious injuries, while four people suffered minor or moderate injuries, the fire department said.
A sixth person was taken to another hospital, a fire department spokesman told CNN, without providing details about their condition.
The suspect has been taken into custody, an official said, CNN reports, adding that it is possible that he is a person without permanent residence.
An eyewitness told CNN affiliate WCBS that officers used pepper spray on the suspect and then tackled him to the ground.
Federal authorities had already been working to implement a detailed security plan for Trump's arrival at Game 3 of the finals on Monday.
Penn Station is a major transportation hub that connects the city's subway, commuter rail lines to New Jersey and Long Island, as well as Amtrak's rail network, it said.
