The US military shot down two Iranian attack drones after Tehran's forces attempted to attack commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a senior US defense official told Radio Free Europe (RFE).
"Iran appears to have attempted to attack merchant ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz tonight. US forces shot down two Iranian single-use attack drones. Traffic through the strait is continuing," the official said.
Iranian state media reported early this morning that Iranian forces opened fire on a tanker that was trying to pass through the waterway without permission from Iranian authorities.
Iranian media reported that explosions were heard near the coast of Syria, raising fears of possible new airstrikes amid reports of progress on the peace deal.
The state news agency IRNA later said the sounds could be linked to military activity in maritime areas, including the area off the coast of Sirika, which overlooks the Strait of Hormuz.
US President Donald Trump said on June 11 that a "great deal" had been reached with Iran that should end the three-month war and that he expected the deal to be signed in the coming days.
