The FBI announced today that it had thwarted a potential threat ahead of the Ultimate Fighting Championship mixed martial arts event, held last weekend in Washington, and that multiple people are in custody.
Fox News Digital, citing unnamed sources, reported that the alleged plot involved using drones with explosives to attack buildings near the event.
“On June 10, the FBI and our law enforcement partners learned of a potential threat to the UFC America 250 event in Washington, D.C., involving individuals from outside the capital region,” FBI Director Kash Patel said in a statement posted on the X network.
Patel did not specify how many people were detained after the operation carried out in several states for allegedly planned attacks.
Fox News Digital reported that five people are in custody and 23 have been identified as part of the network of conspirators.
President Donald Trump, at the Group of Seven summit in Evian, France, said he had not heard of the planned attack.
Vice President J.D. Vance said authorities were trying to investigate clandestine networks that could fuel such violence.
"Twenty-three people don't get to the point where they're about to commit a mass terrorist incident in Washington without serious funding, without serious coordination," Vance said in an interview with Fox News.
"This isn't a few guys doing crazy things, this is a coordinated, planned terrorist plot," he said on Fox News' "Fox & Friends."
