North Korea has decided on measures to "quantitatively and qualitatively" strengthen its nuclear forces, while leader Kim Jong Un called for the modernization of the military, state news agency KCNA reported today.
The measures and Kim's statements came during an expanded meeting of the ruling Workers' Party's Central Military Commission, held on Thursday, KCNA said.
Kim said North Korea's security and "true peace" can only be guaranteed by building a powerful military capable of controlling all threats, according to the report.
The meeting established plans for the renovation of the technical infrastructure of combat systems, the expansion and strengthening of nuclear forces, as well as the standardization, specialization and modernization of military bases, KCNA said.
The Reuters news agency reported that discussions also focused on expanding the role of the Main Reconnaissance Bureau, North Korea's military intelligence agency, to improve its reconnaissance and intelligence capabilities, the report added.
KCNA said the meeting discussed the construction of modern naval bases and the improvement of shipyard capacities, which it assessed as reflecting a major change in the status and role of the navy.
