Iran: New attacks on Iranian military on island near Strait of Hormuz

Iranian state media reported this afternoon that new attacks are underway on military targets on the Iranian island of Qeshm, near the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran's state news agency reported that the island's governor said about 10 missiles had been fired since this afternoon and that there were no casualties.

There has been no immediate comment from the US military, which earlier today said it had struck about 140 targets in Iran in response to the latest Iranian attack on a merchant ship in the Strait.

Iran has responded by attacking Middle Eastern countries, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan and Oman. Oman sits across the Strait of Hormuz, and Tehran has been pressuring it to join in managing traffic through the strategically important waterway.

The fighting is raising questions again as Iran and the US are almost halfway through a 60-day period agreed in an interim agreement, during which they are supposed to reach an agreement on a final end to the war.

The strait, a key route for global oil and natural gas supplies and long considered an international waterway, has become a key sticking point in negotiations that are in danger of breaking down.
