The Palestinian movement Hamas announced today that it has appointed Khalil al-Hayya as its leader, Reuters reported.
Al-Haja succeeds Yahya Sinwar, who was killed in combat with Israeli forces in 2024, while Hamas was fighting a two-year full-scale war with Israel in the Gaza Strip.
Al-Hayya, the exiled head of Hamas in Gaza and the group's chief negotiator, has become an increasingly prominent figure in Hamas' leadership following the deaths of Sinwar and Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in Iran in July 2024.
Al-Haja was among the senior officials targeted in an Israeli attack in Doha in 2025, Israeli officials told Reuters.
