US President Donald Trump took to social media last night to say that "every time Iran kills an American soldier (...) they will pay for that killing many times over."
Trump did not provide further details, but said his directive had been conveyed to US military leaders.
Early yesterday morning, the US launched a ninth wave of airstrikes on Iran after announcing the death of another American soldier, who was killed in Iraq during a "controlled detonation" of a downed Iranian drone.
The US military also identified two of its soldiers who were killed in Jordan on Friday in a strike by Iranian ballistic missiles and drones.
Since the US-Israeli-Iran war began on February 28, 17 American soldiers have been killed in it.
After the signing of the cessation of hostilities agreement, exchanges of air strikes between the US and Iran were renewed two weeks ago, and Washington ordered attacks on Iranian bridges and energy facilities, and since Monday, a city believed to be hiding underground missile bases has also been under attack.
Iran today retaliated against US attacks by striking Washington's Gulf allies - Kuwait and Bahrain, which is home to the US Fifth Fleet.
Jordan reported an Iranian missile attack and said it shot down three missiles. The country's government says there were no material damage or casualties in the attacks. Iran has not commented so far.
The British military's maritime watchdog announced last night that another ship was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, this time off the coast of the United Arab Emirates.
Previously, a fire broke out on a ship off the coast of Oman that was hit by a missile, and the crew abandoned the vessel.
