Typhoon Delfin hits several cities in China, cancels more than 1.300 flights

Typhoon Dolphin hit China's east coast today, forcing more than 300.000 people to evacuate as a precaution, while two airports in Shanghai canceled more than 1.300 flights.

A storm brought heavy rainfall to northern Taiwan yesterday.

The typhoon, which also touched islands in southern Japan, hit the Chinese city of Taizhou in Zhejiang province and northern parts of neighboring Fujian province, bringing strong winds estimated at 151 kilometers per hour when it made landfall, as well as huge waves on the city's coast.

Heavy rains have created a risk of serious flooding in Zhejiang, and authorities have warned of a high risk of landslides.

Shanghai's Hongqiao and Pudong airports canceled about 60 percent of flights scheduled for today, according to local media, and some Taiwanese airlines have also done so.

Meteorologists in China have predicted that some areas could see 200 to 400 millimeters of rainfall over the next few days.

Authorities in Zhejiang evacuated about 390.000 people in the city of Taizhou last night, and about 30.000 people were evacuated in Shanghai.

Zhejiang authorities have also suspended the operation of ferries and cruise ships.
