Nigerian soldiers have rescued 33 people who were kidnapped while traveling in Zamfara state in the northwestern part of the country, the military said today.
The military operation was launched after unknown gunmen abducted the group while they were moving through Kafe area of Zamfara state yesterday, said army spokesman Aliyu Danya.
"The soldiers forced the terrorists to abandon their victims and flee into nearby bushes," the spokesman said, adding that the military secured and rescued all 33 abductees.
The military is tracking "terrorists on the run," he added, without specifying which group might be responsible for the attack.
There has been a sharp increase in killings and kidnappings in Zamfara state in recent months, with at least 32 people killed in separate attacks in June alone.
In addition to the conflict in the northwestern and north-central parts of Nigeria, the insurgency in the northeast has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions of people, according to the United Nations (UN).
Despite promises by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu to resolve the crisis, security challenges continue to worsen.
