Yemeni authorities said today that five people were killed when Yemeni Houthi rebels, who are backed by the regime in Tehran, fired missiles at a ship in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
The Ministry of Transport of the internationally recognized Yemeni government said that four Pakistani citizens and one Indonesian were among the dead. The ministry said in a statement that the Houthis fired three ballistic missiles at the Yemeni merchant ship.
The Bab el-Mandeb Strait in southern Yemen, an alternative route for transporting oil from Saudi Arabia, is once again in the spotlight along the Red Sea, as Iran has closed the passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
The attack on the ship came during a Houthi assault on the government-held Red Sea port city of Moka. Dozens of government soldiers and civilians have been killed in attacks since last week.
The Houthi attacks are part of an escalation against government forces in Yemen, as well as oil facilities in neighboring Saudi Arabia, which supports Yemen's internationally recognized government, and its ships in the Red Sea.
