US President Donald Trump said today that there are no planned US negotiations with Iran and claimed that the Strait of Hormuz is "open and operational", despite limited traffic and an attack on a ship.
Ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz fell by another 20 percent last week, to just 95 ships.
Trump threatened on Monday to bomb Oman because it is negotiating with Iran to manage shipping traffic through the strait that separates the two countries, two officials said today.
The Trump administration has told Oman that it opposes parts of the future agreement, particularly joint Iranian-Omani management of the strait's exit route and the collection of "voluntary fees" from ships.
Iranian authorities have said the waterway will not be reopened until the US meets Tehran's conditions for ending the war, which include lifting sanctions and compensation for war damages.
Trump said on social media today that the US blockade of Iranian ports remains in effect and that all floating mines have been removed.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Garibabadi responded to Trump on the X platform that "soon his misconception regarding the Strait of Hormuz will be corrected, or we will correct the misconceptions of that mistaken man."
Egypt's Foreign Ministry said today that the Iran-Oman agreement could pave the way for US-Iran peace talks.
This Sunday, the 60-day deadline stipulated in the US-Iran memorandum of understanding that established a ceasefire in the war expired, but there is no end to the war in sight.
