More than 100 people died on Tuesday when an artisanal gold mine collapsed in the Central African Republic, a senior official from a local mining association said.
The prosecutor confirmed that a mine collapsed in the village of Zamboye, near the border with Cameroon, but said the death toll and other details were still being determined, Reuters reported.
The prosecutor said in a statement that rescue operations were underway and that an investigation would be opened to determine the cause of the accident and who was operating the mine.
Cameroonian authorities have said they are ready to receive and provide medical assistance to any injured who cross the border.
Artisanal mining is a source of income for many people across Africa, but weak regulations and poor safety standards often lead to deadly accidents.
