Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been disqualified from the presidential race, Iranian state television reported.
The announcement of the Ministry of the Interior states that the Guardian Council, which approves candidacies for the presidential elections, has approved six candidates, including the current president Hassan Rouhani.
The candidacy of cleric Ebrahim Raisi, who is close to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was also approved, reports AP.
More than 1.600 candidates, including 130 women, applied to participate in the presidential elections in Iran on May 19, and the biggest surprise was Ahmadinejad's candidacy.
