US President Donald Trump said this evening, after meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at his estate in Florida, that an "extraordinary" relationship had developed between them.
Trump has previously criticized China and labeled it as a possible threat to the US.
The meeting of the leaders of the world's two largest economies, which was planned with great expectations, fell into the shadow of the attack by American forces on the Syrian army. That attack added more weight to Trump's recent threat that the US could act independently against North Korea, the AP agency assessed.
Trump told reporters that he and Xi had made "tremendous progress" already in their first conversation, and that he believed "a lot of potentially very bad problems will be resolved."
The US president did not provide details, but it was previously announced that the two leaders would discuss China's unfair foreign trade policy and its insufficient efforts to stop North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs.
President Xi said the two delegations discussed important topics and established a friendly, working relationship. He said that he believes that China and the US will develop relations and emphasized the mutual historical responsibility for peace and stability in the world.
