After their first meeting, US President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised to "work tirelessly to ensure growth and jobs in both countries", the two leaders said in a statement today.
At the White House meeting, Trump and Trudeau first discussed improving the position of women in the workplace, but soon moved on to key economic topics.
The two leaders, otherwise diametrically opposed on many issues, highlighted their "deep common economic interests" and confirmed the fact that Canada is the most important foreign market for the US, with more than two billion dollars of daily goods flowing across the border.
Relations with the USA are crucial for Canada, considering that about 75 percent of its exports go to the USA.
Canadians fear that they could be harmed by Trump's renewed negotiations on the North American Free Trade Agreement, possibly dealing with Mexico.
Liberal Trudeau also brought conservative Trump a personal gift, a photo of the American president with the father of the current prime minister, the late Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.
Trump said it was a picture of the two at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York.
The US president said he had great respect for Pierre Trudeau and would keep the photo in a "very special place".
