Oman has accepted to receive 10 prisoners from the American prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba before the departure of President Barack Obama from the White House, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Sultanate in Muscat announced today.
The US Department of Defense has not issued a statement on the transfer.
Oman said it accepted the transfer at Obama's request, without naming the prisoners.
A few days ago, US authorities said they would release 19 of the total 55 prisoners from Guantánamo, a prison that has been in existence since 2002.
The administration of former President Barack Obama advocated closing Guantanamo, but Republicans opposed it.
US President-elect Donald Trump said during the campaign that he does not intend to close this detention center.
