A senior Chinese official has arrived in North Korea to discuss improving cooperation at the highest-level meeting in five years, North Korean state media reported on Friday.

Chairman of China's National People's Congress Zhao Lei, the third-highest official in the ruling Communist Party, arrived in North Korea on Thursday and his visit will last until Saturday.

Immediately upon his arrival, Zhao met with his North Korean counterpart Choe Ryong Hae and discussed how to promote exchanges and cooperation in all fields such as politics, economy and culture.

The two also exchanged views on other regional and international issues of mutual interest, KCNA said.

Zhao is one of seven members of the Standing Committee of the Politburo, the highest governing body of the Communist Party headed by Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

His visit to North Korea marked the first bilateral exchange involving a member of China's Politburo Standing Committee since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

He expects that North Korea and China will hold numerous meetings on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

North Korea seeks to strengthen cooperation with China and Russia in the face of conflict with the US and South Korea over its nuclear program, AP reminds.

China is believed to have long provided aid to North Korea in violation of international sanctions.
