Chinese senior official Zhao Leji said during a rare visit to North Korea that his country wants to "successfully develop" relations with Pyongyang, North Korean media reported today.

Zhao, who is chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (China's parliament) and a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party's Politburo, has been visiting North Korea since Thursday to mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

He is the third most important Chinese politician, after President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang.

Zhao and his North Korean counterpart Choe Ryong Hae attended the opening ceremony of the "North Korea-China Friendship Year" on Friday, North Korea's KCNA news agency reported.

During the speech, the Chinese official recalled that Beijing's "strategic policy" is to "defend, consolidate and successfully develop" bilateral relations.

China is willing to "open a new chapter" in friendly relations between the two countries, Zhao added.

His North Korean counterpart stressed that relations between the two countries "have reached a new golden age under the wise leadership" of their leaders.

Beijing is Pyongyang's main economic support and longtime ally.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is also seeking to strengthen his ties with China, while toughening his tone toward his southern neighbor.
